Million Dollar Baked Ziti

  • Author: Rachel Summers
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

This baked ziti is a comforting, cheesy dish that is perfect for busy weeknights or impressing guests. With its creamy layers and delicious flavors, it’s no wonder it’s called ‘Million Dollar.’

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta, uncooked
  • 1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage for extra flavor)
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 1 can (15 ounces) ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or sausage) and minced garlic. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the marinara sauce with the cooked meat. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, add the cooked ziti pasta to the meat sauce. Stir until the pasta is well coated.
  6. In your baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture on the bottom. Dollop half of the cheese mixture on top, then spread it out gently. Repeat with the remaining ziti and cheese mixture.
  7. Top with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake covered for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  9. Once baked, let the ziti rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Feel free to add in veggies like spinach or mushrooms to the meat sauce for extra nutrition and flavor!
